Join the Green Movement- Small Steps. Global Impact.
The saying “small actions lead to big changes” holds especially true in the context of environmental sustainability. Everyday practices like conserving energy, recycling, and reducing water waste may seem minor individually, but when adopted by the entire North Chicago community, our collective impact becomes monumental.
DID YOU KNOW…if every North Chicago household replaced one incandescent bulb with an LED bulb, the community could collectively save thousands of kilowatt hours of energy annually. Similarly, small changes in waste habits—such as composting food scraps or using reusable shopping bags—can significantly reduce landfill contributions and greenhouse gas emissions.
The City of North Chicago is committed to promoting and creating a more sustainable environment through energy efficiency, improved land and stormwater management, water conservation, pollution reduction, and recycling.
Sustainability is crucial for the health of our planet and the well-being of present and future generations. Practicing sustainability involves the responsible and balanced use of the planet's resources. It includes actions large and small that help support the long-term health of the world’s ecosystems and the species that live within them.
Energy Conservation
Energy conservation is a cornerstone of sustainability. Simple practices such as turning off lights when not in use, unplugging unused electronics, and sealing air leaks in homes can lead to substantial energy savings.

Water Conservation
Water is one of our most precious resources, yet it is often taken for granted. Small actions, such as fixing leaks, installing water saving devices, and adopting efficient irrigation techniques, can make a big difference in water conservation efforts.

Waste Reduction and Recycling
Proper waste management is a critical component of sustainable living. Encouraging residents to compost organic waste, participate in recycling programs, and reduce their use of single use plastics can dramatically cut down on landfill waste.
PRACTICE THE SEVEN R’S:
RETHINK, REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE, REPAIR, REGIFT, AND RECYCLE
Simple steps like switching to energy efficient appliances, reducing water usage, and participating in recycling programs can collectively have a significant environmental impact on North Chicago and well beyond our city.
